Conformation, also known as "dog showing", is a long-time tradition where dogs are showcased in a ring against other dogs to determine which one matches their individual breed standards the closest. Dog shows are done in brackets where dogs first show against their age group of the same breed, then the winners go on to compete against the best of sex, and so on until an overall winner for that breed is determined. From there they go against the other winners of their group (hounds, herding, etc), and then eventually to represent in the Best in Show ring!
Conformation is only open to purebred dogs (mixed breeds don't have breed standards to judge against), however UKC offers additional classes for altered dogs and even Junior Handler classes!
